Popularity is easy to claim and hard to prove, so we used the one public number Steam cannot fudge: total player reviews. Every game below is ranked by how many people left a review, pulled fresh from Steam's review API, with the current approval rating next to it.
Two things stand out. Eight of the twelve are free, which is unusual for a Steam top list and says a lot about how this genre grows. And the ranking does not track quality: the fifth most-reviewed idle game on Steam sits at 54 percent approval, while games with a tenth of its audience clear 96 percent. Both numbers are shown for every entry so you can judge for yourself.

109,695 reviews, 97 percent positive, free. The most-reviewed idle game on Steam is a cat on your desktop that you pet. It became a phenomenon on the strength of being free, weightless and permanently on screen, which turns out to be the whole formula. Start here if you want to understand why the genre keeps winning.
Banana
96,939 reviews, 82 percent positive, free. The infamous one. You click a banana, it drops items, some of those items are worth real money on the Steam market, and that economy is why it charted at all. The lowest-effort clicker on this list and the second most-reviewed. Judge accordingly.
Cookie Clicker
92,938 reviews, 96 percent positive, $4.99. The one that named the genre. The Steam release adds Steam achievements, cloud saves and a soundtrack on top of the browser original, and fifteen years on the ascension loop still holds up. If you only play one game from this list, it is this one.
AdVenture Capitalist
60,391 reviews, 88 percent positive, free. The blueprint every business idle copied. Lemonade stand to interstellar conglomerate, hire managers to automate each tier, reset for angel investors. Released in 2015 and still accumulating reviews, which is the real endorsement.
TBH: Task Bar Hero
45,352 reviews, 54 percent positive, free. The most divisive game here and the clearest proof that review count is not review score. It lives in your taskbar and plays itself while you work, which a lot of people loved and roughly as many did not. Free, so the cost of finding out which camp you are in is nothing.
IdleOn
29,696 reviews, 77 percent positive, free. An idle MMO where eleven characters keep grinding twenty skills while the game is closed. The scope is genuinely enormous and the monetisation is the reason the score sits where it does. Best value on this list if you intend to play for months.
Cell to Singularity - Evolution Never Ends
27,989 reviews, 89 percent positive, free. Four and a half billion years of evolution as a clicker, from primordial soup through dinosaurs to the technological singularity. The best-looking game on this list and the one most likely to teach you something by accident.
Leaf Blower Revolution - Idle Game
26,463 reviews, 94 percent positive, free. Blow leaves, buy Autoblowers, escalate from a broom to a nuclear-powered blower. Forty-plus areas, thirty-plus pets and a crafting system underneath a joke premise. The highest-rated free game in the top ten here.
Scritchy Scratchy
15,374 reviews, 94 percent positive, $6.99. The breakout of 2026 so far. An entire incremental built on scratch cards: rip through stacks, chase rare symbols, bend the odds with upgrades, then unlock the Scratch Bot and let it do the scratching for you.
Nodebuster
14,039 reviews, 97 percent positive, $2.99. The highest-rated paid game on this list and the cheapest. A slick node-smasher with fast feedback and a steady drip of upgrades, sized for short sessions. Punches far above three dollars.
Revolution Idle
12,226 reviews, 87 percent positive, free. Prestige layers stacked on prestige layers, real offline progress, and automation that keeps compounding long past where most idle games run dry. The one to pick if you want a free game that lasts.
The Farmer Was Replaced
9,185 reviews, 96 percent positive, $9.99. The outlier and the smartest game here. You do not farm, you write Python-like code to make drones farm for you, then optimise until it runs unattended. Progression unlocks harder problems instead of bigger numbers.
