Popularity is easy to claim and hard to prove, so we used the one public number Steam cannot fudge: total player reviews. Every game below is ranked by how many people left a review, pulled fresh from Steam's review API, with the current approval rating next to it.
Two things stand out. Eight of the twelve are free, which is unusual for a Steam top list and says a lot about how this genre grows. And the ranking does not track quality: the fifth most-reviewed idle game on Steam sits at 54 percent approval, while games with a tenth of its audience clear 96 percent. Both numbers are shown for every entry so you can judge for yourself.

109,695 reviews, 97 percent positive, free. The most-reviewed idle game on Steam is a cat on your desktop that you pet. It became a phenomenon on the strength of being free, weightless and permanently on screen, which turns out to be the whole formula. Start here if you want to understand why the genre keeps winning.

96,939 reviews, 82 percent positive, free. The infamous one. You click a banana, it drops items, some of those items are worth real money on the Steam market, and that economy is why it charted at all. The lowest-effort clicker on this list and the second most-reviewed. Judge accordingly.

92,938 reviews, 96 percent positive, $4.99. The one that named the genre. The Steam release adds Steam achievements, cloud saves and a soundtrack on top of the browser original, and fifteen years on the ascension loop still holds up. If you only play one game from this list, it is this one.

60,391 reviews, 88 percent positive, free. The blueprint every business idle copied. Lemonade stand to interstellar conglomerate, hire managers to automate each tier, reset for angel investors. Released in 2015 and still accumulating reviews, which is the real endorsement.

It lives in your taskbar and plays itself while you work, which a lot of people loved and roughly as many did not. Free, so the cost of finding out which camp you are in is nothing.
