Best idle games on Steam

Published October 3, 2026 · Updated October 3, 2026

Steam has hundreds of idle games and most store lists sort them by sales. This one sorts by what players said after playing. Every game below has more than 1,000 Steam reviews, and the ranking uses the share of positive reviews, adjusted so that 97 percent from a thousand players does not outrank 96 percent from ninety thousand.

A note on the word idle. Some of these run by themselves while you work, like Bongo Cat, Cookie Clicker and Leaf Blower Revolution. Others are active incrementals that you finish in an evening, like Nodebuster and Magic Archery. Steam files them all under the same tags, and people looking for one usually enjoy the other, so both are here. Each entry says which kind it is.

Review numbers were taken from Steam on October 3, 2026. Prices change with every sale, so the current price is shown on each game's page. For the full catalogue, see all idle games on Steam or the whole Steam index.

01Rank 1

Magic Archery

IncrementalSteamWindows

98 percent positive from 8,479 reviews, free. The best-reviewed game on this list costs nothing and has no in-app purchases. You train a commoner into a legendary archer by crafting targets, running quests for gold and putting magic into your arrows. It is an active game with a real ending, short enough to finish in one sitting.

Bongo Cat

IdleSteamWindowsmacOS

97 percent positive from 111,695 reviews, free. The purest idle game here, because it plays itself while you do something else. A cat sits on your taskbar and slaps it every time you type or click, and the points go toward hats and other cosmetics. There is no goal beyond the collection, and that is exactly why so many people leave it running.

Nodebuster

IncrementalSteamWindows

97 percent positive from 14,088 reviews. A short incremental about smashing nodes and feeding a skill tree that spreads in every direction. Each upgrade makes you break things faster, which pays for the next one sooner, and it snowballs until you are breaking reality. A good first incremental if you have never played one.

Bills Must Be Paid

IncrementalSteamWindowsmacOS

97 percent positive from 11,370 reviews. The surprise of summer 2026. You are deep in debt with a hammer and a pile of piggy banks, and every swing costs stamina. Bankruptcy is part of the loop: paid bills become legacy points that permanently upgrade your hand for the next run.

Tower Wizard

IncrementalSteamWindows

97 percent positive from 8,968 reviews. From the developer of Magic Archery. You help a wizard raise a tower out of magic, study spells and summon spirits that gather resources for you. Prestige speeds up each replay, and like its sibling it has a proper ending.

Cookie Clicker

ClickerBrowserSteamWindows

96 percent positive from 93,576 reviews. The game most people picture when they hear the words idle game, still updated more than a decade on. Grandmas, farms and portals bake for you while you are away, and ascending trades the bakery for upgrades that last forever. The Steam version adds achievements, mini-games and a soundtrack.

The Farmer Was Replaced

IncrementalSteamWindowsmacOS

96 percent positive from 9,661 reviews. The smartest game on the list. You do not farm, you write Python-like code for a drone that farms for you, then optimise it until the whole field runs itself. It teaches each concept as you unlock it, so it works for beginners and still challenges programmers.

Far Fishing

IncrementalSteamWindows

97 percent positive from 1,152 reviews. A calm two-hour fishing trip to the edge of the world. Catch fish, spend them on the boat's upgrade tree and sail further out through nine locations. The smallest audience in this ranking, and one of the highest approval ratings.

Scritchy Scratchy

IncrementalSteamWindowsmacOS

94 percent positive from 16,512 reviews. A whole incremental built on scratch cards. You buy stacks, hunt rare symbols and reinvest in upgrades that bend the odds, until Scratch Bot does the scratching for you. Some cards pay enormously and punish just as hard, so there is a real decision in what you buy.

Rock Bottom

IncrementalSteam

95 percent positive from 1,837 reviews. An incremental mining game where nothing you buy is lost when a run ends. Swing through procedurally generated caves, smelt the ore into bars and spend it on permanent upgrades, eight layers down.
